Tāmaki Makaurau’s Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund is open to receive applications on Monday 29 January 2024 for the Local Fund and Monday 12 February 2024 for the Regional (Auckland wide) Fund. The Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund provides $5.1million annually to support tamariki and rangatahi in Tāmaki Makaurau to take part in sport, play and active recreation.

The Fund is managed and distributed on behalf of Sport NZ’s in Tāmaki Makaurau by Aktive, with support from partners CLM Community Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland, and Sport Waitākere. It also includes a distinct assessment process for organisations that are delivering in a Kaupapa Māori environment.

Jennah Wootten, Chief Executive, Aktive, highlights the Fund’s purpose: “The Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund is available to support quality play, recreation, and sport experiences being delivered to our tamariki and rangatahi.

“We want to support our young people to develop a life-long love of being active. This Fund benefits those who are inactive, face access barriers, and would otherwise not have an opportunity to experience such activities.”

Ms Wootten adds: “We have a team available to guide organisations through the application process so if your organisation hasn’t applied for Tu Manawa funding before or are unsure about how to best go about the process, please get in touch so we can help.”

Andu Lordache, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of HUNGERBALL™, an organisation that has received Tū Manawa funding, talks of the benefits.

"Our collaboration with Aktive and the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund support has made a substantial difference to our ability to provide fun and inclusive active recreation experiences for many thousands of tamariki and rangatahi in schools and communities around Auckland.

“Our latest project prioritised all-ability students on the North Shore and in South Auckland marking a shift from have-a-go sessions towards regular adaptive play sessions co-designed with teachers and students to maximise participation, inclusivity, and overall wellbeing."

Round 1 2023/24 of the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Local and Regional Funds saw Aktive, CLM Community Sport, Harbour Sport, Sport Auckland and Sport Waitākere approve funding totalling $1,615,451, benefiting 48 organisations. Round 2 2023/24 sees Aktive, CLM Community Sport, Sport Auckland and Sport Waitākere with a further $1.5 million to distribute.
