The Asian population in New Zealand is growing rapidly with a significant increase in the Auckland region which fuels Auckland’s growth.
In 2018, 28 percent (or 442,774) people living in Tāmaki Makaurau identified with one or more Asian ethnic groups, compared with 23 percent (or 307,233) in 2013.
ActivAsian aims to engage the growing Asian community to be more active in sport and active recreation with a range of initiatives that target different age groups and cater to all abilities.
ActivAsian began in 2009 through Harbour Sport and is now a regional initiative. It has four key objectives:
- Build capability
- Increase participation
- Increase awareness
- Inclusion in sport.
