The Michaels Ave Community Centre (MACC) opened in 2023 with a bold vision: to transform an underused reserve into a vibrant, multi‑use hub for sport, culture and community life in Ellerslie.
Two years on, it’s exceeded all expectations — attracting over 23,000 visitors a year, growing club membership, and becoming a go‑to venue for everything from cultural groups to corporate events.
Mark Weipers, MACC’s current Secretary says: “What we’re really seeing is the wider community becoming more cohesive around the Centre. It’s becoming more than just a sports hub.”
This case study explores how MACC’s collaborative model, community focus and ongoing learnings are shaping one of Auckland’s most successful shared facilities.
