West Auckland Riding for the Disabled (WARDA) has supported children and young people with physical, cognitive and social‑emotional disabilities through therapeutic horse riding for more than 50 years.

After two decades of planning, fundraising and advocacy, WARDA opened a purpose‑built covered indoor arena at Henderson Valley Park in 2025. The facility has transformed service delivery, providing year‑round certainty, enabling growth in programmes, and creating a permanent home for riders, volunteers and the wider community.

As Treasurer Shirley Furneaux explains, “For the first time, we have a true permanent home that allows us to plan ahead and grow services.”

This case study highlights the power of community‑led leadership, long‑term vision, and targeted public investment to deliver lasting, inclusive outcomes.
