IWI OF ORIGIN HISTORY AND VISION

THE HISTORY AND THE VISION

This journey is part of a five-year aspiration to grow Iwi of Origin as an enduring taonga, embedding kaupapa Māori principles into the fabric of participation, connection, and identity:

  • Year 1 marked the Return, bringing whānau back into a space of reconnection.
  • Year 2 focused on the Rebuild, strengthening engagement and refining the foundation.
  • Year 3 Te Whakaoranga is the Revitalisation, breathing sustained life into the kaupapa, expanding its reach, and ensuring its lasting impact.
  • Years 4 and 5 will deepen sustainability, embedding long-term accessibility, resourcing, and intergenerational participation to make Iwi of Origin thrive beyond the present.

At the heart of this vision is Mana Taurite - equitable access and resourcing, ensuring that all Māori, regardless of location, background, or ability, can take part. Participation is open to Māori through multiple entry points, allowing whānau to engage in ways that are meaningful to them. Whether registering through marae, iwi, hapū, whānau, sport clubs, business or corporate organisations, friend groups, or other community connections, Iwi of Origin ensures that whakapapa remains the foundation - embracing inclusivity and fostering belonging across all pathways of engagement.

Te Reo Māori is seamlessly woven into the experience, reinforcing language as an everyday, living expression of identity. From bilingual engagement to culturally rich programming, the event embodies the vitality of Māori language and tikanga in action.

The sports programme features a diverse range of codes, blending contemporary and traditional Māori games to foster participation and cultural connection. Participants can engage in netball, basketball, touch, rugby 7s, league 9s alongside ki o rahi, urutomo ancestral games, taonga tākaro, and other Māori kemu that celebrate Māori play and movement.

Iwi of Origin is proudly supported by Māori organisations that serve as sport and service partners, ensuring the event reflects kaupapa Māori values and enhances participation across all levels.

Alongside the sports and activity programme, Iwi of Origin features a complimentary expo area offering interactive and engaging experiences. The expo showcases career pathways, cultural knowledge, wellness initiatives, and iwi-connected programmes, creating opportunities for learning and engagement beyond the field. A vibrant village hub surrounds this space, featuring kai stalls, live music from the stage truck, and exciting giveaways, bringing together the energy of the event in an active, whānau-friendly atmosphere.

Iwi of Origin is committed to ensuring an inclusive and accessible experience for all participants, regardless of ability. From adaptable sports formats to accessible event spaces, every aspect is designed to foster engagement, belonging, and enjoyment for whānau of all backgrounds and capabilities.
